Who is Asamoah Gyan? 

Gyan is from the capital of Ghana, Accra, where he was born. His father, Baffour Gyan Mensah, and mother, Cecilia Amoako, supported him from early on in his career. He has siblings including his elder brother, Baffour Gyan, who was also a footballer. 

Gyan adored football as a kid and enjoyed playing in the streets with friends and competing in schools, where he displayed his talent at an early age.

He went to primary school at Seven Great Princess Academy in Dansoman, and then secondary school at the Accra Academy where he pursued football alongside his studies, before he was spotted by local coaches. 

Gyan began his professional career at Ghanaian club, Liberty Professionals. He netted a fair amount of goals, and that saw him step up to bigger clubs in Europe.

He is one of the greatest footballers in Ghana’s history, and played for clubs in Italy, France, England, UAE,China and India. 

He is Ghana's all-time top scorer and was a vital player for the country in the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup run.

How old is Asamoah Gyan? 

Gyan was born on November 22, 1985 and is 39 years old as of March 2025. He began his career at age 17 with a professional career that lasted two decades.

Which clubs did Asamoah Gyan play for?

Gyan started his professional football career at Liberty Professionals, a club in Ghana. He represented the club for one season where they competed in the top flight. The forward played 16 league matches in the Ghana Premier League and scored 10 goals, ending the campaign as the league’s third top goal scorer.

His talent caught the attention of European scouts, and soon he moved to Italy to join Udinese in 2003. At first, he struggled at Udinese because Italian football was very different from what he was used to.

He was loaned to Modena for two years, where he played 54 games and scored 15 goals. After his heroics at the 2006 World Cup, clubs showed interest in him, but he returned to Udinese and became an important player.

In 2008, Gyan moved to France to play for Rennes for €8 million. He played well in the French league and became known for his speed and goal-scoring ability.

His performances attracted attention from English clubs, and in 2010, he joined Sunderland in the Premier League. He had a great first season, scoring important goals, including one against Chelsea. The fans loved him, but after one season, he moved to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

At Al Ain, Gyan became a superstar. He scored 128 goals in 123 appearances and won multiple league titles. He was the league’s top scorer for three seasons. After his success in the UAE, he played for clubs Shanghai SIPG in China, and then returned on loan to UAE with Shabab Al-Ahli.

He also played for Kayserispor in Turkey for two seasons, and NorthEast United in India, and his last club was Legon Cities, back in his home country Ghana.

Gyan started playing for the Ghana national team in 2003 when he was only 17 years old. He scored his first goal for Ghana in his debut match against Somalia. This made him one of the youngest players to score for the national team.

Gyan played a big role in Ghana’s qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He scored goals in the qualifiers and helped Ghana reach their first-ever World Cup. At the tournament in Germany, he scored Ghana’s first-ever World Cup goal against the Czech Republic, and helped Ghana reach the Round of 16.

In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Gyan was Ghana’s hero again. He scored three goals, including a winning goal against the USA in the Round of 16. Ghana was one step away from becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals, but Gyan missed a last-minute penalty against Uruguay. Despite this, he was praised for his great performances.

Gyan also played in the 2014 World Cup, becoming Africa’s all-time top scorer in the tournament with six goals. He played in many Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, helping Ghana reach the final twice. He remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.

When did Asamoah Gyan retire?

Gyan officially retired from football on June 20, 2023. After playing for many years, he decided to end his career at the age of 37. Gyan had not played professional football for some time before announcing his retirement.

He retired as Ghana’s all-time top scorer and is often praised by Ghanaians for his contributions to the game. Even after retiring, Gyan remains an important figure in Ghanaian football.

After a long legal battle, the court finalised their divorce in 2023. Gifty was given custody of the children, and Gyan was asked to provide financial support
