Aston Villa fight back to draw level against Liverpool, edge closer to securing Champions League spot

Liverpool were looking confident as they face Aston Villa having defeated Tottenham 4-2 last weekend at Anfield.

However, a determined Aston Villa side gave Klopp’s men a hard fight, coming from a 3-1 lead to level 3-3 late in the game.

The draw puts more pressure on Tottenham as they keep fighting for Champions League football next season.

As it happened

Aston Villa made two changes to the side that was defeated 1-0 at Brighton last time out in the Premier League.

Emiliano Martinez and Youri Tielemans returned to the starting XI as Robin Olsen dropped back to the bench.

Jurgen Klopp made just one change to the Liverpool side that beat Tottenham 4-2 at Anfield last Sunday. Andy Robertson is not involved in the squad tonight so Joe Gomez replaced him at left-back.

Liverpool started the game brightly and scored the first goal just 90 seconds into the game with their first attack.

Harvey Elliott sends Mohamed Salah away down the right. He picks out Elliott again and the 21-year-old whips in a cross. It took a bit of a deflection and Emiliano Martinez who was under no pressure fumbled it into his net.

Aston Villa got the equaliser 10 minutes later from a brilliant work by Ollie Watkins on the wing, he got down to the byeline and then pulled it back for Youri Tielemans, who smashed the ball home from 16 yards.

Liverpool kept pressing and took the lead again before the halftime break after Mohamed Salah sprayed a cross to Luis Diaz. He picks out Joe Gomez, whose low cross is palmed by Emiliano Martinez into the path of Cody Gakpo, who tucked in.

The second half started and it was Klopp’s men all over Aston Villa's box and their pressure paid off with the third goal.

Harvey Elliott swung in a free-kick and Jarell Quansah got away from his marker before heading in a fine effort via the inside of the woodwork.

Liverpool thought they were cruising to a victory but a late surge from Aston Villa got the game back on level terms.

Alexis Mac Allister controlled the ball wrongly after a straightforward pass from Alisson. It goes to Calum Chambers, who picks out Jhon Duran and the sub rifles a shot in the bottom corner from outside the box to make it 3-2.

The Reds could not hold on to their one-goal lead and gave it up immediately after Moussa Diaby played a through ball into Duran and the ball hit the striker's thigh and looped over Alisson's head.

The referee blew the final whistle with the draw meaning that Tottenham must defeat Manchester City on Tuesday to have a fighting chance for next season's Champions League football.
