Former Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed in detail how he was approached for the Nigerian national team interim position.

Eguavoen became the interim coach of the Super Eagles last year following the resignation of Findi Geroge.

The Nigerian legend led the Super Eagles and qualified them for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.

However, he left his position and returned as the technical adviser, which led to the appointment of the new head coach, Erik Chelle.

Speaking on a Bet9ja podcast on X, he said, “Time for the game in September, we still didn't have a coach for whatever reason, maybe now I don't know, maybe finance, I can't say honestly speaking. And then the game there was closer and closer and I was approached by our Oga.

“I have to do the games, first, I declined, I said I wasn't going to do it, and then they have to prevail on me because we cannot leave that space and by virtue of my position, I should step in and see what I can do until we find a substantive coach who we will replace.

“I had an appointment in Europe, my second home in Belgium. I travelled and then I was told we have a chance now. Bruno Labadia is coming on board, so I was relieved. It's no problem. But the negotiations, I'm sure didn't go down well.

“Whatever happens, I don't know, I don't want to be part of it. And I was called again that Bruno declined for whatever reason, and it was like 10 days before the game or 2 weeks before the game, but I had no choice. President Gusau, the leader now said, Coach, you have to do it and that's OK, no problem, I'll do it.

“I came in. So after the first game at home and away. That was it. And I said, I gathered the boys, thank them for coming, and this is where we are now. Hopefully going forward we'll get a new coach soon. We wish you the best and that's it.

“And people wrote that I haven't resigned. I cannot resign in the position I was not occupying temporarily anyway, so it passed. And then there was a debate internally to do the next game as well, and I did.”
