From Europa League success to fighting for the Serie A title, Atalanta have thrived under Gasperini
The mastermind behind Atalanta’s remarkable rise, head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, has shared insights into his philosophy and the foundation of his team’s success.
Speaking at the inauguration of a youth training centre he personally funded, Gasperini emphasised the importance of freedom and joy in football—a principle he believes is central to the success of players like Ademola Lookman and others in his squad.
Gasperini building a legacy through youth development
The new Giuseppe Gasperini and Antonietta Vit training camp in Gugliasco, Gasperini’s hometown, holds a special place in his heart.
Dedicated to his parents, the facility aims to nurture young talent by providing them with professional resources while maintaining an atmosphere of fun and freedom.
“This is worth more than a trophy for me,” Gasperini revealed during the ceremony, adding, “My parents always supported me and celebrated my achievements. I want that same energy to inspire these kids as they grow.”
Gasperini's approach stands out in a football world that is often consumed by rigid systems and high stakes and he created the camp to allow young players to embrace the game’s essence without excessive oversight.
Gasperini reveals fuel behind Atalanta’s success
Under Gasperini’s leadership, Atalanta has evolved from a mid-table Serie A side into a Champions League contender and last season’s Europa League champions.
Players like Lookman have flourished, embracing a style that promotes creativity and freedom on the pitch.
“We still play like kids, with a sense of freedom,” Gasperini explained, adding, “We don’t let our minds get cluttered with unnecessary pressure.
“That’s how we’ve managed to remain competitive in the Scudetto race and Champions League while keeping our players happy.”
This philosophy has not only brought success but also a unique identity to Atalanta, and by fostering an environment where players enjoy their game, Gasperini has unlocked their full potential, turning Atalanta into one of Europe’s most exciting teams to watch.
