Atletico Madrid slams Olmo registration as Barcelona's biggest rivals remain silent

Barcelona's rivals put out a statement condemning the CSD ruling that permitted Dani Olmo's registration.

Atletico Madrid released a statement criticising the CSD’s ruling permitting Barcelona to re-register their two summer signings, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, crickets. It is reported that Los Blancos are remaining neutral, as they view Barcelona as a partner rather than rival.

What happened

As Pulse Sports reported, Barcelona had problems registering two of their summer signings, Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. They failed to get permission from LALIGA and RFEF before the deadline on December 31st; hence both players were unregistered.

As the Federation confirmed, the Blaugrana have now met the financial requirements; however, they were not allowed to re-register Olmo and Victor, as Spanish regulations bar a club from re-registering a player that has previously been unregistered in the same season

The Blaugrana hierarchy sought redress with the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), the highest sports council in Spain. The body found that Barcelona had cause and granted them a precautionary measure that allowed the temporary registration of both players.

Atletico Madrid’s statement

Barcelona’s rivals have pressured LALIGA throughout the process to remain resolute against the behemoth that is Barca and uphold the rule set to ensure the financial sustainability of LALIGA clubs.

Hence, the CSD’s decision to grant the Blaugrana a precautionary measure was seen as a subversion of this policy, and as such, Atletico Madrid put out a strongly worded statement that read as follows.

“Club Atlético de Madrid wants to show its deep concern for the situation generated in Spanish football after the resolution adopted by the Consejo Superior de Deportes (“National Sports Council”) on Wednesday. We consider that this decision jeopardises the current system, questioning the rules of the game.”

“The Ley del Deporte (‘Sports Law’) itself includes and protects LaLiga’s economic control and yet, with this resolution, it is put at risk. LaLiga’s economic control has been the main tool that has managed to turn our football into a solvent sector, a process admired internationally.

“Our club, like all LaLiga members until this resolution, has been complying with the rules of economic control and we will continue to respect them. In fact, in order to be able to compete at the level we have been competing at in recent years, we have decided to carry out various capital increases, despite the enormous effort that this entails.

“This government intervention creates a very dangerous precedent, as it opens the door to circumventing the rules and repeating the serious mistakes of the past. Atlético de Madrid remains committed to rigour and responsible management. Without clear and equal rules for all, no fair competition is possible.”
