UEFA announced today via their official channels that the Technical Observer Panel has awarded Gabonese striker Aubameyang the Europa League Player of the Season.

Aubameyang had a spectacular season in Europe. He led one-time Champions League winner Marseille to the semi-final of the competition before they were knocked out by the eventual champions, Atalanta.

The former CAF Player of the Year scored 10 goals in the competition, three more than the next best, Roma’s Romelu Lukaku. He also has the most goal contributions in the campaign, 13.

Aubameyang’s season was also a historic one, as his 10 goals took his all-time tally in the competition to 34, helping him surpass Radamel Falcao and become the top scorer in Europa League history.

The 34-year-old pipped the likes of Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman—who scored a hattrick in the final to lead his team to victory—to the award.

Winning the Europa League Player of the Season also boosts Aubameyang's chances of becoming CAF Player of the Year.
