The Argentinean tactician who penned a two-year deal with ‘Tiimu ya Wanainchi to replace Nabi Nasreddine has broken his silence on why he opted to turn down several offers and take on the Young Africans project.

Angel Miguel Gamondi knows one or two things about coaching top African sides, especially those with a huge following like Young Africans.

The Argentinean tactician who penned a two-year deal with ‘Tiimu ya Wanainchi to replace Nabi Nasreddine has broken his silence on why he opted to turn down several offers and take on the Young Africans project.

“I was keenly following Young Africans, but also the club President (Hersi Said) explained a very good project to me; I wanted a good challenge because I had offers from Egypt and Saudi Arabia, but I chose Young Africans.”

“My main objective is to play CAF Champions League football.”

The 56-year-old who has been out of action for eight months since November 2022, when he left his head coach role at Morocco’s Ittihad Tanger will be expected to lead Young Africans to the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

New season for Aucho

Uganda Cranes assistant captain Khalid Aucho will be expected to return to Young Africans ahead of the new Tanzanian football season, which starts with the charity shield on Sunday.

The season opener, however, returns with a new format where, unlike in the past, where the league and FA Cup winner faced off, this time, the top four teams from last season face off.

League domestic double champions Young Africans will face Azam FC, who finished third, while Simba, who finished second, will take on Singida Fountain Gate FC, which finished fourth.

The games get underway on Sunday, the 9th and 10th of July, while the third playoff and final will take place on the 13th of July at the Mkwakwani stadium.

New signing Gift Fred will be expected to line up for Young Africans as they hope to start the campaign with another charity shield win ahead of the new season.
