The Super Eagles star made an impressive debut on loan at Augsburg from Brentford
Frank Onyeka had a dream debut for Augsburg in a 3-1 Bundesliga win over St. Pauli, and the Nigerian midfielder has earned praise from his new coach Jess Thorup.
Thorup impressed by Onyeka’s immediate contribution
The Augsburg manager did not hold back his admiration for Onyeka after the match, hailing the Super Eagles star, saying, “He has only trained twice, and then he was away with the national team.
But he showed from the start what a good player he is. He is ready to help the team, and that is exactly what he did.”
Onyeka assisted Phillip Tietz’s goal in the 66th minute, delivering a pinpoint cross that helped double Augsburg’s lead. Thorup lauded Onyeka’s performance, adding, “The only thing missing was a goal, but he made an assist and played really well.”
Onyeka’s stellar all-round Augsburg debut
Beyond his assist, Onyeka was superb in midfield throughout the match. The Nigerian midfielder won nine out of 11 duels, completed 100% of his aerial battles, and registered five tackles.
He also created another clear-cut scoring chance and was pivotal in Augsburg’s transition play in their eventual 3-1 success.
Though he missed a big chance early in the game, Onyeka’s overall performance was impressive, as he started his life with Augsburg’s on a superb note.
His standout display contributed to Augsburg’s first Bundesliga win of the 2024-25 season, setting a positive tone for his loan spell in Germany.
