Austin Odhiambo reveals ambitious season's target for Gor Mahia amid recent troubles

Austin Odhiambo, who is the reining FKF MVP award holder, has revealed his targets for the rest of the season as Gor Mahia seek to return to winning ways following a blip against City Stars.

Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo has made it clear that he remains undeterred in his ambitions for the ongoing 2024/2025 FKF Premier League season, even in the wake of a surprising 2-1 defeat to Nairobi City Stars.

 Having enjoyed a stellar last campaign that earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, Odhiambo is keen to build on that success.

The former AFC Leopards star has had a strong start to the current season, scoring two goals in as many league matches. His impressive performances have also led to his selection for the national team, where he has been instrumental in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom, Odhiambo expressed his commitment to improvement:

"I always challenge myself to do better than last season. My target is to help the team retain the league title, win the FKF Cup, surpass the goal involvements I had last season, and defend my MVP title."

K'Ogalo began the season brightly, thrashing promoted side Mathare United 4-0 and Posta Rangers 3-0 before a goalless draw against table leaders KCB.

However, their unbeaten start came to an unexpected halt with the loss to Simba wa Nairobi in Machakos Stadium on Monday, October 28.

When asked about the possibility of Gor Mahia maintaining an unbeaten season, Odhiambo acknowledged the challenge but noted that it is "too early" to draw parallels with the impressive 2015 campaign, during which the team enjoyed a long unbeaten run.

Last season, K'Ogalo aimed for similar success but faltered in the latter part of the campaign, suffering three defeats.

Despite the recent setback, Odhiambo emphasised the need for focus, stating;

"We are interested in taking a game at a time and bagging maximum points from each contest." His determination and ambition resonate with Gor Mahia's fanbase, who are eager to see the team reclaim their status as a dominant force in Kenyan football.

Head coach Leonardo Neiva also addressed the defeat, stating he would not press the panic button despite this being his first loss in the top flight. "Football is not a joke," Neiva told Flashscore.

"It was a very bad day in the office for Gor Mahia. Anything can happen in football; everything is possible. It’s unfortunate that we didn't take our chances, and while we were leading 1-0 in the first half, we couldn’t protect the result. The team as a whole didn’t perform well."

As the season progresses, both Odhiambo and Neiva are committed to improving their performance, looking to bounce back and keep their title ambitions alive.
