Taiwo Awoniyi played only 25 minutes in Nottingham Forest's loss to Aston Villa
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi’s measured return from injury continued as Nottingham Forest stumbled to a 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa in the Premier League.
The Nigerian forward has been introduced into the game in the last three Nottingham Forest fixtures as he continues to work his way to full fitness after a three-month injury layoff. The latest being
Unfortunately, Awoniyi’s only impact on the game was a yellow card collected in the 85th minute after a confrontation with Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa.
In the end, Awoniyi was unable to help Nottingham Forest avoid a ninth match without a win in the Premier League as their freefall into the relegation zone continues.
Aston Villa, on the other hand, continue to rise in the league standings, after their third win in a row and their sixth game without a loss in the league.
Goals from Bertrand Traore and the ever-dependable Ollie Watkins were enough to give the Villans the win, taking them to sixth on the table with only six points separating them and Tottenham in 5th place, the only automatic UEFA Europa League spot.
Watkins has now scored 12 goals in the 2022/23 Premier League with Aston Villa and is enjoying another fine season in England’s top flight.
Awoniyi's hoping to continue pre-inury form
Awoniyi started to pick up pace in the Premier League just before getting injured in January, after scoring two goals in his last four games with Nottingham Forest, and with the club struggling to fend off relegation, they will be hoping for Awoniyi to hit that type of form again as the season draws to a close.
The forward will also be keen to put the injury spell behind him and get back to his best form, but the club's immediate priority is to get him to full fitness.
