Ballon d'Or is not for midfielders — Jude Bellingham says who should win France Football's prize

Ballon d'Or top contender Jude Bellingham played down his chances of lifting the award in a recent interview.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham is a major contender for the Ballon d'Or, but the England international does not lose sleep over it, as he believes the award was made for players stylistically different from him.

What Bellingham said

The 20-year-old midfielder was recently named LALIGA Player of the Season and is billed to win France Football’s coveted prize as well; however, in an interview with Teledeporte, the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder played down his chances.

"I always felt that the Ballon d'Or and those kind of things were like for strikers and wingers, the flashy players. I know I can entertain a crowd but no one can do it like Vini,” Bellingham said.

“I've said before that when he is at his best, he's the best player in the world. I know he likes to say the same about me and that's the kind of relationship we have. You don't always have to be friends with your team-mates but it helps when you can be so close off the pitch as well, and then on the pitch it reflects.

“We have a good understanding of each other's movement and if he was to win it I'd feel just as proud as if I'd won it because I know that I've helped contribute to his success."

Bellingham has had a remarkable season, both individually and collectively. He has scored 23 goals in all competitions—19 of which place him third on the LALIGA top scorer rankings—and provided 12 assists.

He has also won the league and the Supercopa de Espana with Real Madrid and will play his former team, Dortmund, in the Champions League final this coming weekend.
