Barcelona and Real Madrid lose court case for 'El Clasico' rights.

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been denied the rights to own the 'El Clásico' trademark.

The giants are on the other side of a case against LaLiga once again, as they filed a petition to assume control of the trademark; however, their requests were denied.

Real Madrid and Barcelona lose court case

According to Relevo, The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office has denied the petition by Real Madrid and Barcelona to own the tag 'El Clásico.'

The court ruled that the name bore similarities to the LaLiga branding of the fixture 'ElClasico,' and there's a risk of confusion and association with the trademark already in use.

Court statement: "The risk of confusion includes the risk of association with the prior mark. It is also estimated: similarities between signs, reputation of the prior mark and affected fields of application, we consider that the use of the requested mark could generate a link in the mind of the consumer with the previous brand."

Other than their matches in LaLiga, both clubs organise friendlies and match events between themselves, like the tours of America. However, following this ruling, they cannot market such events as 'El Clásico.'

However, they have one month to appeal the case before the patent and trademark office as they continue to battle for control over their fate.

Meanwhile, the Barcelona Legends, led by Ronaldinho, suffer a humiliating 3-0 loss in Zambia.
