Barcelona have asked La Liga president Javier Tebas to resign immediately for providing prosecutors with false evidence
Spanish club Barcelona have called for La Liga President Javier Tebas to resign from his current role after further findings from the now-infamous Negreira case were made public.
La Liga president accused of presenting false evidence
Spanish news outlet La Vanguardia published a report claiming that Tebas had supplied false information to facilitate the case against Barcelona and the Catalan club have responded to the findings by calling for the La Liga chief’s immediate resignation.
Barcelona have been accused of continued corrupt practices in sports by Spanish prosecutors, stemming from payments made over almost two decades by the club to the former vice president of the Spanish Referees Association, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.
As part of investigations into the case, Tebas provided prosecutors which La Vanguardia now claim were misleading, and as a consequence, Barcelona believe that he should resign.
Barcelona demand Tebas’ designation
The club released a statement on which they said, “Given the gravity of the information that has appeared today Monday in La Vanguardia in which the La Liga president Javier Tebas is linked to the presentation of false evidence to the public prosecutor to incriminate our club, FC Barcelona wishes to expresses its deepest indignation, anger and dismay.”

The club also warned that what Tebas is being accused of is of grave consequence to all La Liga teams, and as such, his immediate resignation is warranted.
Barcelona’s statement continued, “The article published today by La Vanguardia is of such gravity that it should put all the clubs in La Liga on alert, given that is talks of practices which are in no way consistent with the job of the president of La Liga.

Xavi Hernandez speaks in the press conference ahead of the match against Athletic Club about the charges brought against Barcelona in the Negreira case.
If only for this fact, that of giving himself powers that do not belong to him, although also for reasons of dignity and respect for the presidency of La Liga, Mr.Tebas should resign his post.”
Barcelona and Tebas have not seen eye to eye in recent years with the club pushing for the European Super League which is at variance with the president’s CVC investment plan for the league.
Barcelona claimed that the president's rigidity was the deciding factor in the loss of Lionel Messi to PSG on a free transfer, while La Liga have also levelled several accusations against the Blaugrana including the claims that kicked off the “Caso Negreira.”
Tebas maintains his innocence, just as Barcelona maintains its innocence in the Negreira case and time will be the ultimate judge of who the real victim is in this case.
