After going three points clear at the top of the La Liga table with Thursday night’s win, Barcelona could see their hard work thrown into the gutter after allegedly breaching a FIFA rule.

Dani Olmo, Robert Lewandowski, and Ferran Torres scored one each as the Catalans secured a 3-0 win over Osasuna, taking them to 63 points, three clear of second-placed Real Madrid.

The game was a rescheduled one after it was initially postponed when Barca lost one of their highly-rated medical doctors. The new date did not sit well with either teams but all complaints fell on deaf ears and La Liga insisted it must be played.

However, Hansi Flick’s side could now see their win overshadowed by controversy over Inigo Martinez’s involvement in the game.

Barcelona allegedly breached FIFA regulations with Inigo Martinez’s participation

The controversy centres on a possible breach of FIFA regulations following Martinez’s withdrawal from Spain’s national squad due to injury.

Martinez was initially called up by Spain manager Luis de la Fuente for the recent international break but had to withdraw after sustaining a right knee injury. He was replaced in the squad by Dean Huijsen and remained in Barcelona to focus on his recovery.

However, just days later, the veteran defender was fit enough to start alongside Eric García in Barcelona’s latest fixture, as Pau Cubarsi was sidelined and Ronald Araújo returned late from Uruguay duty.

Osasuna, however, believe Martinez’s participation may have breached a FIFA regulation, which stipulates that players who withdraw from international duty due to injury must observe a mandatory five-day waiting period before featuring for their club, unless explicitly cleared by their national federation.

As a result, Osasuna are seeking clarification from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to determine whether Martinez was eligible to play.

If found guilty, Barcelona would have to forfeit the three points won in the game.
