Bellingham completes remarkable comeback as miracle Madrid take advantage away from Etihad

Real Madrid beat Manchester City at the Etihad to take an advantage into the second-leg of their UCL play-off tie.

Jude Bellingham scored a late winner to help Real Madrid seal a sensational comeback victory over Manchester City.

A tie typically reserved for the later stages of the competition; Real Madrid and Manchester City's lack of consistency in the group stage meant they were doomed to go the playoff route, with a sole round-of-16 slot available to either team.

Given their inferior league phase position, the Cityzens hosted the first keg. Buoyed by the animated Etihad, they took the lead twice in the game, however, a late flurry from the visitors, with goals from Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham ensured Los Blancos take a 3-2 lead to Santiago Bernabeu.

Key match details

The match got off to a frenetic start, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. Vinícius Junior was at the heart of the action, but his appeals for a penalty were waved away by the referee, who deemed him offside. The Brazilian then showcased his vision with a pinpoint pass to Kylian Mbappe, whose shot was saved by Ederson.

City had the bulk of possession, however, and eventually broke the deadlock through a slick team move, culminating in an Erling Haaland goal. City faithful had their hearts in their mouths during the lengthy VAR check to confirm the goal, which was eventually deemed legal.

Vinícius almost responded immediately with a deflected shot that crashed against the crossbar. The chances continued to flow, with Phil Foden, an early substitute for the injured Grealish, testing Thibaut Courtois and Manuel Akanji's header flicking the crossbar. Federico Valverde and Mbappe also went close for Real Madrid before the break.

The second half was just as intense, with Haaland's shot being deflected onto the crossbar by Eduardo Camavinga. Vini then delivered a pinpoint cross that Jude Bellingham headed wide before Ederson palmed away Mbappe's flicked attempt.

The French forward eventually found the back of the net on the hour mark, equalising on the hour mark. The goal set up a thrilling finale, and City retook the lead through Haaland's penalty after Ceballos was adjudged to have fouled Foden.

However, Real Madrid refused to give up, and Brahim Díaz scored against his former club just two minutes after coming on as a substitute. Bellingham then sealed the win, poking home from close range to hand Carlo Ancelotti's side a massive advantage.
