The Nigeria National League (NNL) champions, Bendel Insurance have arrived Uyo the city that will host the opening fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The NNL champions will be playing in their first NPFL game since 2019 on Sunday against Akwa United at the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo.
Nigerian elite Football League will start on January 8 (Sunday) with 20 teams drawn into two different groups.
Insurance drawn in Group A
The league organizers, Interim Management Committee (IMC) said that the 2022/23 NPFL season will be played in an abridged format to ensure the country’s premier league calendar is in line with CAF football calendar.
Akwa United is drawn in Group A alongside Kwara United, Nasarawa United, Plateau United, Gombe United and Elkanemi.
Others in the group include eight-time champions, Enyimba, Bendel Insurance, Shooting Stars and Remo Stars.
In Group B, we have Niger Tornadoes, Doma United, Wikki Tourists, Lobi Stars and defending champions Rivers United.
Completing the group are Abia Warriors, Dakkada FC, Rangers, Sunshine Stars and Bayelsa United.
Insurance storm Uyo
Benin Arsenal stormed Uyo city on Friday evening ahead of Sunday clash.
Insurance confirmed on their twitter, “Eti Ndubid eyio, Uyo. The Benin Arsenal is in town for the #NPFL23 opener against Akwa United”
The game will be broadcast live on television.
Akwa United unveils 39-man squad
In a related development, the home side, Akwa United Football Club, has unveiled 39 players to play ahead of the new season. The squad for the new season comprises both old and newly signed players including three youth players.
The players are all eligible to represent the club in competitions such as the Nigeria Professional Football League NPFL, the State Challenge Cup and the Aiteo Cup (FA cup).
