Omala’s rise to prominence since being named the SJAK player of the month as a form three student at Kisumu Day high school has made him a newsmaker in local football circles for the last four years.

Gor Mahia hotshot striker Benson Omala has responded to the plaudits he is receiving from the fans, media and neutrals alike after a stellar start to the season.

Omala has netted six goals so far this season, putting him top of the goalscoring charts. His form has shown proof that last season was not a one-off, as he scored 26 league goals this season.

This has naturally made him a newsmaker in Kenyan football circles, and he always sparks debate whenever he is not included in the Harambee Stars squad.

When he went through a rough patch that allowed Elvis Rupia to beat him to the top scorer award last season with 27 goals, he also attracted criticism for his inconsistency towards the end of the season.

Omala has finally commented on the spotlight he gets on a regular basis whether he performs well or not.

“It’s hard but as a player, you have to cope up with everything,” Omala told Sports Eye Sports, “When you are doing good, people will talk, when you are doing bad, people will talk,” he added.

“It’s just you. It is that mental toughness that you have.”

Benson first made an impression at a bigger stage during the first season of Chapa Dimba in 2018 when he won the Golden Boot in the Nyanza Region and in the National Finals.

His professional football career began in 2019 when he joined Western Stima.

Manyatta United came back stronger in 2019 and won the Nyanza and National Finals. So impressed were sports journalists that their association named him Player of the Month in December 2019.

He also got to travel to Spain with the Chapa Dimba All Stars team, which trained with professionals there and watched a match between Barcelona and Girona.

He spent a brief period in 2021 on loan at Swedish third-tier side Linkoping, who asked him to play as a right back, and as expected, he never turned out to be the next Gary Neville.

He has however continued growing as a player at Gor Mahia since returning, and if he keeps on his current trend, the sky is the limit.
