Chukwu lifted Nigeria's first continental Cup, the Unity Cup, presented by President Shehu Shagari on March 22, 1980, at the National Stadium, Surulere.
The Nigeria Football Federation mourns the death of Christian Chukwu, captain of Nigeria's victorious 1980 Africa Cup of Nations team and later coach, who passed away in his hometown of Enugu on Saturday.

The player known as "Chairman" for his commanding presence in front of the defence for both Enugu Rangers and the national team, Chukwu proudly lifted the Unity Cup, Nigeria's first continental title, after receiving it from President Shehu Shagari at the National Stadium, Surulere, on March 22, 1980.

Goodbye, Chairman: Nigerian football legend Christian Chukwu passes away at 74
Super Eagles legendary player and coach Christian Chukwu, Nigeria's 1980 AFCON captain, passes away at 74.
He said, “We have lost a good and great man. Chukwu was the definition of a strong, dedicated and disciplined leader on and off the field. He was not nicknamed ‘Chairman’ for nothing. He embodied strength, vision and consistency.
“We pray that the Almighty will grant his soul eternal rest, and also grant the family and friends he has left behind, and Nigeria football’s fraternity the fortitude to bear this big loss.”
Christian Chukwu, born January 4, 1951, won AFCON bronze medals with Nigeria in 1976 and 1978 before captaining them to victory on home soil in 1980, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
A one-club man for Enugu Rangers, he later coached both them and Kenya's Harambee Stars before managing Nigeria's Super Eagles in 2002, leading them to third place at the 2004 AFCON.
