Gor Mahia and Kenya Police have suffered a significant setback after Nyayo National Stadium failed to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) requirements for hosting their upcoming continental assignments.
A CAF inspection committee visited Nairobi on Friday to evaluate the suitability of Kenya’s stadia for hosting matches, and the official report has since confirmed that none of Kenya’s current stadia meet the necessary criteria.
The Kasarani Stadium was closed for renovations at the beginning of 2024, with a completion deadline set for December 2025.
Meanwhile, the Talanta Sports Stadium is still under construction as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
In contrast, Tanzania has two stadia approved for use: the Azam Sports Complex and the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Uganda also has two available venues: the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Naambole and the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.
Nyayo Stadium, which has not yet been completely closed for renovations, was initially seen as a potential venue for upcoming AFCON qualifying matches by the Harambee Stars.

FKF President Nick Mwendwa disclosed plans to apply for a temporary license from CAF to use Nyayo Stadium for the Harambee Stars' home matches in the two-legged qualifiers.
“We are in the process of applying for a provisional license this month and I'm certain it will be granted,” Mwendwa remarked as quoted on The Star earlier this week.
He also expressed optimism about the government completing the necessary work on the facility.
“I want to promise Kenyans that if the Minister finishes the work, we shall host the AFCON qualifiers in the country,” he added.
