Harambee Stars and Ivory Coast battled through a tough FIFA World Cup qualifier in Lilongwe on Tuesday afternoon.

Harambee Stars held African champions Ivory Coast to a goalless draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Stars head coach Engin Firat made one change and that seems to aid a far stronger performance from the Kenyans.

Both struggled to retain possession in the beginning, but it was Engin Firat's men who dictated terms in the opening stages and Timothy Ouma won the first corner in the fourth minute with Kenneth Muguna's attempt being put back into play.

Ivory Coast started to settle down in the 23rd minute and Fofana’s shot sailed wide after partnering well with Boga Jeremei and Aamni Lazare in the heart of the park, seconds later, a follow-up shot by Franck Kessie was blocked from a great pass by Rooney Onyango.

At the half-an-hour mark, Ivory Coast kept Kenya in their own half as Fofana continued to show his class allowing Latte Junior some space but Willy Bolly’s shot went over the bar.

Fofana continued to dominate and he unleashed a beautiful volley which almost deceived Patrick Matasi.

After 30 minutes of play, Michael Olunga pushed forward as time was slowly ticking against the hosts in search of an opener.

In the last five minutes, a brilliant interchange of passes between Fofana and Konan Ghislain earned Ivory Coast a free kick in a dangerous position. Jérémie Boga took the free kick, but Matasi sent it out for an unfruitful corner as both sides headed to the tunnel with no goals to show for it.

The Elephants were quick off the blocks from the break Boga had a good opportunity six minutes with a volley at the near post that flashed wide.

Emerse Fae eventually made a double change just before the hour-mark, one defensive, as Evann Guassand replaced Emmanuel Late and Oumar Diakitte replaced Jeremie Boga.

Kenya continued to be under pressure but Olunga had an opening after he went through on goal but he fired a shot straight at goalkeeper Fofana Yahia instead of playing a cross at the near post.

Harambee Stars continued to play a high line and nearly found the opener in the 71st minute but Timothy Ouma failed to utilize the chance.

Kenya were nearly punished in the last minute after a bad clearance sent found Amani Lazare infront goal but his shot hit the bar.
