Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega selected to host the 2024 Africa Nations Championship.

Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County is set to take center stage as one of the key venues for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and potentially the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This decision was revealed in a high-profile stakeholders meeting in Nairobi, led by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa.

This strategic move comes after Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda were jointly awarded the rights to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, a historic first for the continent.

The Bukhungu Stadium, once ready, will be a state-of-the-art facility capable of hosting international matches.

The Governor's office, in collaboration with the Ministries of Sports and Roads and Public Works, is ensuring the readiness of the stadium by June.

In preparation for the CHAN tournament and the potential AFCON 2027 games, significant upgrades and renovations are being carried out at the Bukhungu Stadium.

The County's CECMs, Mr. Mophat Mandela of Sports and Architect Patrick Kundu of Roads and Public Works, are overseeing these developments.

In December 2023, it was revealed that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda would co-host the 2024 CHAN, subject to successful stadium inspections.

The joint hosts will each provide a stadium for the tournament, with an additional venue in Zanzibar.

The CHAN tournament, reserved for players who are active in their domestic leagues, has grown in prestige and popularity.

The previous tournament, hosted by Algeria in early 2023, saw Senegal emerge as champions amidst a field of 17 teams, following Morocco's withdrawal over a travel dispute.

The 2024 CHAN in Kenya is expected to bring a significant economic boost to the region, along with an influx of football fans from across the continent.
