Nigeria’s Sunday Mba has been the centre of adulation from African football’s governing body, CAF, for his winning goal in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Mba’s strike was the only goal as Nigeria’s Super Eagles defeated Burkina Faso in the final to take home Africa’s biggest prize.

The former Enyimba and Enugu Rangers midfielder forever etched his name in Nigerian football history after scoring Nigeria’s only goal in the 2013 final against Burkina Faso.

With the game tied at 0-0 nearing half-time, Mba seized the 2013 AFCON final by the scruff of the neck, skipping past two players before smashing home a volley to give Nigeria the lead.

12 years later, CAF have recognised Mba’s efforts to lead Nigeria to AFCON glory with a post on their official X account, with a video of the Super Eagles icon’s goal against the Burkinabe.

CAF celebrate Mba and Aboubakar

In addition to Mba, CAF also highlighted the heroics of Cameroonian legend Vincent Aboubakar, who sealed his country’s 2017 AFCON triumph.

Aboubakar scored an 88th-minute stunner for Cameroon against Egypt in Libreville to give the Indomitable Lions a their fifth AFCON title.

CAF praised both Mba and Aboubakar for their contributions to their national teams’ success in the biggest games of their careers, with both stars earning iconic status after their heroics at the 2013 and 2017 finals.
