Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango aims for CAF Champions League success with new coach and revamped squad against Al Merreikh Bentiu.

Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango has set high aspirations for his team as they prepare for their upcoming CAF Champions League preliminary round clash against South Sudanese powerhouse Al Merreikh Bentiu.

The first leg is scheduled to take place at the Juba National Stadium on Sunday, August 18.

Onyango expressed optimism about the team's prospects under their new coach and the fresh tactics introduced during their pre-season training abroad.

"The progress has been good. We have a new coach, and our pre-season training outside the country has introduced us to new styles, different from what we had last season. This has been beneficial, and we are in a good place as we approach the next game," he commented.

With recent strategic additions to the squad, including Alphonce Omija, Ghanaian Enock Morrison, Ugandan Chris Akena, Congolese Gedeon Bendeka, and Samuel Kapen from Nairobi City Stars, Gor Mahia is bolstering its lineup to enhance its competitiveness on the continental stage.

Onyango is particularly focused on making a significant impact in the Champions League to showcase his capabilities on a larger stage.

"I believe we have the potential to achieve great things with this squad, and we are hopeful of advancing beyond the preliminary round to the next stage," he added.

"My goal is to showcase my talent in the Champions League and prove my worth. Our target is to avoid defeat in the away game, and then aim for a strong result at home," he concluded.

If Gor Mahia manages to surpass Al Merreikh Bentiu in the two-legged preliminary stage, they will face a formidable opponent in the next phase—defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt.

Al Ahly, the most decorated club in the history of the competition with 12 titles, will undoubtedly be a tough challenge, reflecting the steep ascent Gor Mahia must undertake to make a mark in the tournament.

Reflecting on Gor Mahia's recent continental experiences, their last appearance in 2021 ended in disappointment against Zambia’s Napsa Stars.

Despite playing well, a last-minute penalty by Zambian international Emmanuel Mayuka in the return leg dashed their hopes, culminating in a 2-0 aggregate defeat.
