The appointment of Belgium's Marc Brys as Cameroon's men's football coach has sparked controversy between FECAFOOT and the Sports Ministry over his selection.

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has publicly voiced its surprise and disapproval following the Cameroonian Sports Ministry's recent announcement of Belgian Marc Brys as the new head coach for the men's national football team.

This move has ignited controversy and highlighted a deep-seated rift between the country's football governing body and governmental sports authorities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Sports Ministry detailed the appointment of Brys, who will be joined by assistants Joachim Mununga and Giannis Xilouris, alongside a newly assembled technical, medical, and administrative team.

This decision came after the non-renewal of former coach Rigobert Song's contract, whose tenure concluded on February 29, despite leading the Indomitable Lions to the 2022 World Cup and the last 16 of the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

FECAFOOT's response to the Ministry's unilateral decision was swift and stern.

"The Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has learned, alongside all Cameroonians, of the appointments made to positions of responsibility within the National Senior Men's Football Team," the federation stated.

According to FECAFOOT, the Sports Ministry's actions directly contravene Decree No. 2014/384, which outlines the organization and operation of national football teams, thereby undermining the federation's authority and processes.

"This unilateral decision coincides with FECAFOOT's commitment to follow the very high directives of the President of the Republic by offering full cooperation to ensure a beneficial reconciliation for the future of our beloved Indomitable Lions," the statement further stated.

The controversy casts a shadow over the legacy of Rigobert Song, a celebrated figure in Cameroonian football, who, despite his efforts, faced criticism over the team's performances under his leadership.

Song's era concluded with a mixture of pride and disappointment, highlighting the intense pressures and high expectations placed on the national team.

FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto'o has also been caught in the crossfire of criticism following the team's performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite offering his resignation, Eto'o's gesture was rebuffed by his executive team. However, the current controversy suggests a possible erosion of his influence within Cameroon's footballing circles amid growing dissatisfaction and calls for reform.
