Canada will consider the tournament one of its best performances since winning the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup

Uruguay's bid for a record 16th Copa América title took a dramatic turn as they secured a hard-fought third place finish against Canada in Charlotte.

Marcelo Bielsa's men, still reeling from their semi-final disappointment, displayed resilience in a thrilling encounter that ended 2-2 before La Celeste triumphed 4-3 on penalties.

The match ignited early when Rodrigo Bentancur, spurred by a pinpoint header from José Maria Giménez, unleashed a thunderous strike to give Uruguay a dream start within the first 10 minutes.

However, Canada, determined to script their own historic chapter, responded emphatically. Ismaël Koné, demonstrating acrobatic prowess reminiscent of Zlatan Ibrahimović, leveled the score midway through the first half, capitalizing on a loose ball in the six-yard box following Moise Bambito's delivery.

Uruguay's hopes of reclaiming the lead were dashed by VAR, which disallowed Facundo Pellestri's effort soon after.

Moments of peril ensued as Nahitan Nández heroically cleared Jonathan Osorio's close-range attempt off the line just before halftime, preserving parity for La Celeste.

As the game intensified in the second half, Canada seized the initiative when Jonathan David, their prodigious 24-year-old forward, struck his 28th international goal from close range, putting the Canucks in front.

With victory tantalizingly close for the North Americans, Uruguay rallied in stoppage time. Veteran substitute Luis Suárez, renowned for his predatory instincts, found the net with a crucial equalizer, forcing the contest to penalties.

In the nerve-wracking shootout that followed, both teams traded successful spot-kicks until the pressure mounted on Canada.

Goalscorer Koné and star player Alphonso Davies faltered, allowing Uruguay to clinch their 10th Copa América bronze medal under Bielsa's guidance.

Despite the heartbreak, Canada's remarkable journey in their debut Copa América resonated with pride, exceeding expectations and earning admiration for their spirited performances.

Meanwhile, Uruguay, despite the bitter disappointment of missing out on the final, found solace in ending their campaign on a positive note, showcasing resilience amidst adversity both on and off the pitch.
