The Gor Mahia coach believes teams will not be putting their bodies on the line in Saturday’s Charity Shield but the trophy will act as extra motivation
Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinstry will be employing a cautious approach even as he expects a tight game against Kakamega Homeboyz in the FKF Charity Shield on Saturday.
Gor, the Premier League champions last season, take on FKF Cup winners Homeboyz in the season’s curtain-raiser but the coach will be using the game to test the level of preparedness of his team ahead of their title defence after what has been a short break that saw the team return just over three weeks since the last campaign.

“You always want competitive games as you get into the season and pre-season games are always that. People want to win them but they are not necessarily putting their bodies on the line but the Charity Shield is an upgrade there is a trophy on the line, not the biggest trophy in the season but teams want to win,” said McKinstry.
“For players, it is a short career and you want to try and collect as many medals as you can so for the players and staff we want to go out and do that but also keeping in mind that in two weeks’ time we will kick off the KPL.”
Gor Mahia were on the end of some tough results against Homeboyz last season, losing to them twice in three meetings, and McKinstry expects another tough contest against Patrick Odhambo’s men who he has tipped to also challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The roadblock was chiefly due to an outstanding Ksh1.1 million (approx.. UGX 28.5 million) owed to Burundi international, Jules Ulimwengu. With his dues now settled, the Kenyan champions are primed to onboard their latest signings.
“In the last two years, Hombeoyz are one of the best teams in the league, they had a slow start to last season but the previous year, they missed out on the KPL championship on goal difference to Tusker and last year winning the FKF Cup and also having a strong second half to the season,” he added.
“We expect them to be very strong again throughout the year not just in the Charity Shield, we expect that come round 33 or 34 of the league, they will be around the top three places so we know it is really a tough game.”

K’Ogalo are now free to complete their transfer business having cleared pending dues owed to former players.
“They have got the better of us a couple of times last season but equally the games have been very close. We won 1-0 in Kakamega early in the season, an own goal decided the cup game and then they scored in the 90th minute to win in the second leg in the league. So, we are two teams who are very close so it will be a tight game.”
The two teams have had contrasting pre-season preparations, Gor opting to pitch camp in Thika after they were kicked out of the CAF Champions League over late payment of money owed to former players, while Homeboyz headed to Uganda for a number of friendly matches.
