The Kakamega county government has explained what is being worked at Bukhungu Stadium and when the upgrade of the facility will end to be used for the 2024 CHAN tournament.
The Kakamega county government has given an insight into the scope of work needed to make Bukhungu Stadium ready for the 2024 Africa Nations Championships (CHAN).
Bukhungu is among the facilities earmarked to host matches when Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania co-host the tournament in September this year and the national and county governments have joined efforts to ensure it is completed in time.
The stadium, which is in the second phase, has already seen the county pump in Sh400 million, with more expected from the national government to complete a number of specialised features.

Mombasa will not host any of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations matches after government decided to build proposed new 60,000-seater stadium at Nairobi’s Jamhuri Sports Ground.
“We are constructing the right C-section and installing specialised features such as floodlights for night matches,” Kakamega governor Fernandes Barasa posted on social media.
“We are also equipping the playing pitch with an advanced drainage and irrigation system in line with international standards. We expect to complete this in the next three months.”
The first phase of the stadium’s upgrade involved offices of the county government, 200 capacity parking space, construction of stands, VIP and VVIP rooms, a doping control room and two changing rooms.
The second phase will also see the main VIP stand, terraces, gym, six changing rooms, and dispensary room installed while the third phase, which will cost Ksh1.4 billion, will involve pitch earthworks, carpeting, and access roads among others.
It is a race against time for Kenya given it is six months remaining before the tournament is held and fans in Kakamega are hoping that construction work will meet the deadline.
