Victor Osimhen's chances of joining Chelsea this season have taken a significant blow as the Blues target another Nigeria-eligible striker
Premier League giants Chelsea have reportedly moved on from trying to sign Nigeria international Victor Osimhen as they set their sights on Atletico Madrid’s Samuel Omorodion for a summer transfer.
Chelsea back in for Omorodion
According to Sky Sports’ Gianluca Di Marzio, Chelsea are reportedly back in the hunt for Spanish-Nigerian forward Omorodion and will be hoping to seal a €50 million deal with Atletico Madrid for the young striker.
Di Marzio posted a message on his X account saying, “Chelsea came back strong on his first choice: Samu Omorodion. Operation going forward on the basis of 50 million euros”
The move will all but end Chelsea’s interest in Osimhen, with the Blues unlikely to finance two big money transfers for strikers this summer, while also relying on Senegalese star Nicholas Jackson.
Omorodion’s age would also suit Chelsea’s project better than Osimhen, with the 20-year-old retaining more resale value than the Napoli man, while also being cheaper in the market and commanding a much lower salary.
Is Omorodion eligible to play for Nigeria?
Born to Nigerian parents in Spain, Omorodion is still eligible to represent either country at senior international level, despite the striker currently opting to play the nation of his birth.
Omorodion has already represented Spain at three youth levels, including at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where he has scored once in three games for La Roja’s U-23 team.
Despite the current conditions, there is still hope that Omorodion could choose to turn out for the Super Eagles when he comes of age as he is yet to receive a senior call up for Spain and is thus still eligible to represent Nigeria if he chooses.
