The Blues had to overcome a 1-0 defeat in the first leg to come back and win the tie thanks to a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge to advance to the next round.

Raheem Sterling's thumping first-half strike was followed by Kai Havertz's penalty in the second half to secure the comeback victory and knock out Dortmund in the process.

Dortmund struck back with their first real chance but Marco Reus' goal-bound shot from a direct free-kick was saved by Kepa Arizabalaga in the 17th minute.

Chelsea continued to create chances but lacked the cutting edge to convert as usual which was evident when Havertz hit the bar from point-blank range in the 28th minute.

Marius Wolf inadvertently blocked Chilwell's cross with his hand and upon VAR intervention which included watching the pitchside monitor, centre referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot.

When the dust finally settle almost five minutes later, Havertz stepped up to take the penalty and sent Alexander Meier the wrong way but hit the foot of the bar for the second time on the night.

Lucky for the German international, VAR intervened and called encroachment against multiple Dortmund players which led to a controversial penalty retake.

Havertz stepped up again and repeated the first penalty, only this time he found the inside the net and not the woodwork to put Chelsea up on the night and in the tie after 53 minutes of play.
