The football world is buzzing ahead of Monday’s Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, where Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., and Ademola Lookman are among the contenders vying for the prestigious title.

Real Madrid's Vinicius is a top favourite following his exceptional season, marked by his game-winning performance in the UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

However, despite Vinicius’ incredible year, France captain Mbappe is getting strong support from international teammates William Saliba of Arsenal and Christopher Nkunku of Chelsea.

Both Saliba and Nkunku, when asked about their Ballon d’Or pick, showed clear loyalty to their compatriot. "As a Frenchman, we will push for Kylian," said Nkunku.

Mbappe’s 52 goals and 20 assists last season have certainly added weight to their backing, even as he faces stiff competition from fellow stars.

France Football editor-in-chief Vincent García emphasised that “individual performance” is the primary criterion for the award and by these measures, Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid this season, has made an undeniable case for himself.

Vinicius Jr. and Lookman still in contention

While Mbappe has an impressive resume, Vinicius Junior’s achievements also make him a favourite in his own right.

Scoring in the Champions League final and helping Real Madrid secure European and LaLiga honours have kept the Brazilian star at the forefront of the conversation for the Ballon d’Or.

Vinicius’ success with Real Madrid, including 24 goals and 11 assists last season, have kept him firmly in the race, even as Mbappe’s individual numbers grab headlines.

Lookman, though considered an underdog in comparison to the likes of Mbappe and Vinicius, is still making waves.

The Super Eagles star’s standout season, which included his hat-trick in the Europa League final, paired with his performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, helped him become the first player in Atalanata history to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or.
