Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal and Chelsea have been smart in the transfer window compared to what rivals Manchester United did when they signed Casemiro.
Livepool legend Jamie Carragher is back on Casemiro’s case after praising London clubs Arsenal and Chelsea for their summer signings.
Carragher believes the London rivals have done better business in the transfer market this summer than Premier League rivals Manchester United when they signed Casemiro.
Casemiro to Manchester United
Brazilian midfielder Casemiro shocked everyone when he swapped LaLiga for the Premier League.
United paid 70 million pounds to prise to the 31-year-old from the Los Blancos last summer.
Casemiro’s signing proved to be decisive as the Red Devils returned to Champions League finish after a top four finish under new manager Erik Ten Hag.
The midfielder also helped the cup end a long wait for a title as they defeated Newcastle United to claim the Carabao Cup earlier this year.
Carragher blasts Casemiro signing
But despite a brilliant debut season at Manchester United, Carragher does not see United’s decision to buy the midfielder as a sensible one.
The Liverpool legend has taken a swipe at Casemiro and United with his latest opinion piece in the Telegraph.
According to him, the record signings of Declan Rice, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez remain a sign of good thinking from both clubs than United’s Casemiro move in the long term.
“The prices for Fernandez, Rice and Caicedo are astronomical. They are also good deals,” Carragher stated in his Telegraph column on Friday.
“The proof of that is the £70 million Manchester United paid last summer for Casemiro. The Brazilian will end up costing United more than Arsenal and Chelsea paid for Rice and Caicedo.”
Carragher added that Casemiro will never be a good value for money for the Premier League giants.
“Caicedo and Rice are examples of thinking ahead – going big now to save cash for the next six or seven years in which they will assume their role,” he added.
“I never believed Casemiro would be value for money. Not because there is any doubt that he has been a world-class player. But because he is at a stage of his career when he cannot not fully repay United’s massive fee.”
“He was a panic buy when he joined a year ago, bought in the immediate aftermath of the failed pursuit of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona; an ageing, stellar name signed for big money and on a massive salary to appease increasingly disgruntled fans.”
