The Englishman has broken his silence after leaving West London for the Spanish capital this summer.

Conor Gallagher has refuted claims that his technical abilities were insufficient for his continued stay at Chelsea

Despite being a key player under Mauricio Pochettino in the 2023-24 season, the midfielder was informed that he would have a reduced role under new manager Enzo Maresca

This led to a drawn-out transfer saga, ultimately resulting in his £33.7m move to Atletico Madrid on August 21, 2024.

What Gallagher said

Ahead of England's UEFA Nations League clash with the Republic of Ireland, Gallagher addressed the suggestion that his technical skills were lacking.

He emphasised his strong performance under Pochettino, stating, "I think last season I had a good season with Chelsea, and you could see by Pochettino playing me every game and showing his trust in me."

Gallagher expressed gratitude for the support he received from Chelsea fans and Pochettino, who provided him with a platform to showcase his abilities.

Despite his departure from his boyhood club, the 24-year-old maintains positive feelings towards Chelsea and the memories he created there.

"Honestly, with Chelsea, I have only got good things to say," Gallagher added. "Amazing football club, my boyhood club where I grew up through the academy.

"I am so thankful and grateful for everything they did for me in the academy and the first team. As for the fans, last season especially they really warmed to me which made me feel confident and good and very happy as well.

"So I leave Chelsea with really special memories...the dream came through. The dream came true. So, I am very lucky."
