Key match details
Sevilla, in search of their first away win of the campaign, seized the initiative early on, with Valentín Barco's inviting cross narrowly missed by Peque.
As the game progressed, Athletic found their footing, with Nico Williams' low cross causing chaos in the box, barely eluding his brother Inaki. Ernesto Valverde's side eventually broke through nine minutes shy of halftime, courtesy of Mikel Jauregizar's thunderous strike from the edge of the box.
Orjan Nyland nearly gifted Athletic a second moments later but recovered well to deny the older Williams brother. Sevilla dominated the early stages of the second half, and Dodi Lukebakio's 54th-minute effort rattled the post.
The match took a dramatic turn with eight minutes remaining, as Julen Agirrezabala's reckless challenge on Mateo Mejia earned him a red card. Replacement goalkeeper Padilla made an outstanding stop from Nemanja Gudelj's free-kick but was cruelly undone in stoppage time.
Unai Nunez's attempted clearance rebounded off Padilla and into the net, following Chedira Ejuke's cross, snatching a dramatic equaliser for Sevilla.
