The Portuguese gaffer believes he has the master strategy to tame Victor Boniface and his rampant Bayer Leverkusen side
AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca has outlined the key strategies his team must use to secure victory against Bayer Leverkusen in their crucial Champions League clash.
AC Milan facing defensive challenge against Leverkusen
After starting their European campaign with a 3-1 home loss to Liverpool, Fonseca was keen to point out the importance of a strong defensive performance while also maintaining attacking play against Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen side.
Leverkusen, led by Nigerian forward Victor Boniface, have proven to be a formidable force in attack, starting their European campaign with a 4-0 win over Feyenoord.
However, Fonseca remains confident in Milan's ability to hold their own defensively as he acknowledged that while Milan has performed well in Serie A, the Champions League presents a different challenge.
Fonseca confident of AC Milan’s strategy
Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s match, Fonseca noted, “We need to have continuity. Defensively, I think the team has grown, and this will be a good test of our capabilities. To beat a strong team like Leverkusen, we need to be defensively perfect.”
The Portuguese manager was also keen to stress that defending against Bayer Leverkusen did not mean that his AC Milan side would only sit in a deep block without attacking.
"Tomorrow we will obviously defend because we are playing against a very strong team, Fonseca said, before adding, “but when we have the ball, we want to play."
Milan’s attacking intent will face a challenge, however, with the potential absence of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, who remains doubtful after sustaining a knock.
