City Sports Group is set to glamourize grassroots sports by celebrating the stars of tomorrow through the Sports & Leadership Awards.

The 2023 edition of the Sports Leadership Awards will see City Sports Schools celebrate and appreciate the amazing young talents in their care across multiple sports.

Saturday, December 2nd is the d-day with over 300 guests set to converge in Lagos to honour and appreciate the year-round effort of students, parents, stakeholders and all others affiliated with the City Sports name.

CEO of City Sports Group Shola Opaleye shed more light on the Sports Leadership Awards at a press conference, updating the general public on the specifics of the event.

Mr Opaleye gave a roundup of City Sport's year in review, stating some of the achievements worth celebrating at the Sports & Leadership Awards.

"We had a tennis program this year, the first time we’re having tennis among the City Sports activity family, tennis is now on board. We’ve always had basketball but this year we opened an additional basketball centre, the number of our students grew very much this year."

"Community programs, we also still do that as we’ve always done, more activity was put into that this year as well. In terms of travel and our global sports program, this year we’ve travelled three times already, we have one more travel which will make it four."

"This is also the first time we’ve travelled for basketball, this year in June we travelled to Spain, Barcelona for a basketball competition, that was also a milestone. We went to Germany this year, it was the first time we went with 80 people, that was also huge because we went with four teams, u-9, u-11, u-13 and u-16."

"Many great things have happened this year and these things deserve to be celebrated, we deserve to recognise our people," he said as a justification for the awards night.

"There are many awards on the night but there’s one major award that one player wins, across all the players in City Sports in all the locations that we have, one person usually stands out to win what we call the sports leader of the year."

"This is greater than the Ballon d’Or because the Ballon d’Or celebrates a player’s ability but we are celebrating a player’s character, we are celebrating the discipline and the leadership skills and qualities of our students which of course cuts across many disciplines and many facets of life."

"It's not just a sports award, it is a sports and leadership award, all the awards that are gonna be won on the night are based on leadership qualities not abilities because we don’t want to just be celebrating abilities at the age of 9,10,15 and those young ages because it could be misleading so let’s just try to focus on the foundation"

"We have so many things in stall for the students, we’re not just focusing on the key players here, we’re looking at rewarding all students, there will be general awards also for all students based on their hard work, efforts, perseverance, teamwork and courage through the year."

City Sports head of school also chipped in with specifics on how the awards will be run and the changes to be expected from the last edition.

"This is actually the third edition, we had the first one in 2021, the second one in 2022 and now the third one which will be even more massive because we are giving over 30 awards to different students under different categories," said Grace.

"We have so many categories here in City Sports, we have the introduction level, foundation, advanced, and pre-academy level in City Sports."

"We don’t just focus on the players' physical ability, we also look at their leadership skills which include discipline, integrity, excellence, teamwork, perseverance and courage, these are the attributes that we use to rate our students during our awards."

"Every student is evaluated on all these leadership skills, not some but all of them so every MVP must have all these leadership skills to actually win an award."
