LaLiga champions Barcelona are at risk of losing new signing Ilkay Gundogan thanks to a clause in the German's contract
Barcelona have not unveiled midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as a new player, despite several reports confirming that the German has agreed to a move to the LaLiga champions and there is already a chance that he could leave the club.
Barcelona insert ‘get-out-free’ clause in Gundogan’s contract
Gundogan has reportedly agreed to become a Barcelona player after deciding not to renew his contract at Manchester City, and the midfielder is believed to have undergone a medical with only a confirmation by the club stopping him from becoming an official Blaugrana.
Despite the excitement of the new signing, Barcelona face a scenario where they could lose the German midfielder before he even plays a game for them.
According to reports in Spain, the German midfielder has requested that the club insert a clause in his contract that could allow him to cancel his contract before the close of the current transfer window.
Gundogan safeguards himself from Barcelona’s financial woes
The origin of the reported clause in Gundogan’s contract comes from the singing of Jules Kounde, who joined Barcelona from Sevilla last summer.
Despite being unveiled as a Barcelona player during last summer’s transfer window, Kounde had to miss the start of the LaLiga season after the Blaugrana were unable to register him until after two league weekends due to financial difficulties.
In order to avoid the same experience as Kounde, Spanish outlet Sport, through reporter Toni Juanmarti, has reported that Gundogan has inserted a clause in his Barcelona contract that will allow him to cancel his contract if the same situation presents itself.
If the scenario occurs, Gundogan will be allowed to leave Barcelona for free and complete a transfer to a new club since he would not have been registered by any league at that point.
