A coach in Ghana is nursing serious injuries following a through beating from rival supporters that left him unconscious and needing urgent medical attention
A coach in Ghana was left unconscious and requiring urgent medical attention following a beating by rival supporters.
Nsoatreman FC coach Maxwell Konadu was attacked by fans of Boafoakwa Tano following a goalless draw between the two teams at the Sunyani Coronation Park in Bono region.
Boafoakwa Tano supporters were reportedly not happy that Konadu had masterminded a draw against their team following a resolute defensive display from Nsoatreman FC and invaded the pitch after the match, leading to the physical assault.
The former Asante Kotoko coach was left unconscious and was rushed to the hospital.
“He got to the hospital unconscious and back conscious in two hours’ time but unfortunately went back around 10pm and still yet to be back active. Still in hospital,” club spokesman Gyempheh Joel posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening.
Boafoakwa Tano condemned the incident, promising to work with the Ghana police to bring the perpetrators to book
“In a time when the beauty of sport should be celebrated, it is disheartening to witness behaviour that go against the principal of respect, camaraderie and fair competition from both sides,” the club said via a statement.
“The instances of violence and disorder at various football, matches not only tarnish the image of the sport but also pose a threat to the safety of all individuals present.”
Ghana Football Association responded by ordering a temporary ban on Bofoakwa Tano FC from using the Sunyani Coronation Park as its home venue with immediate effect.
Joel later gave an update on the coach’s condition on Monday, saying he is stable, having regained consciousness but is not yet fully verbally active and remains restless.
“Coach Maxwell Konadu is back to consciousness, but not fully. He's still very restless and not really verbally active. Get well soon, our friend, our coach,” he said via a social media post.
