The Blues are keen to get rid of last season’s star performer to comply with financial regulations.

Chelsea and LaLiga side Atletico Madrid are in negotiations for English midfielder Conor Gallagher, whose future has been uncertain for the past 12 months.

Why do Chelsea want to sell Gallagher?

The West London club are open to selling Gallagher, who came through the club's academy, as they look to balance their squad and comply with profit and sustainability rule (PSR) regulations.

Despite rumours linking the 24-year-old with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, Gallagher starred for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino last season, starting 37 of the club's 38 league games.

However, his consistency in 2023-24 has not stopped the Blues from wanting a sale to comply with financial regulations.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish club have opened talks with the Blues over a potential deal for the England international, who has one year remaining on his contract.

The transfer expert states that Atletico Madrid have identified the 23-year-old as a top target for the summer transfer window, with a potential fee of £34 million plus add-ons being discussed.

What comes next?

Having been earmarked for a Blues clearout, news of Gallagher possibly departing for the Spanish capital is unsurprising. The 24-year-old had previously been advised to take the move to join Diego Simeone’s side, and that transfer could now materialise.

Gallagher has not rejoined the Chelsea squad after Euro 2024 exertions with England, with Enzo Maresca’s team on tour of the United States.

The Blues are winless after friendly games with Wrexham and Celtic.
