The England midfielder is reportedly closing in on a move to Atletico Madrid.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher has turned down a new contract offer from the club, paving the way for a potential move to Atletico Madrid as per The Athletic.

Gallagher’s Chelsea future

The 24-year-old's current deal expires next summer, and the Blues were keen to tie him down to a contract, offering him a two-year extension with the option of a further year.

Despite offering Gallagher improved terms, the England international has opted to explore opportunities elsewhere, with Atletico Madrid leading the race for his signature and a €40 million deal reportedly close to completion.

Speaking before Chelsea’s third pre-season fixture against Club America, Enzo Maresca suggested a move away was a possibility.

“At the moment, Conor will be back with us when we are at Cobham,” said the club’s new head coach said. I think he is already at Cobham or he will be in the next few days to start to do something with Cole (Palmer) and Marc (Cucurella).

“Then he will train with us. When the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen. Not only for Conor but for all of the players.”

What comes next?

With Gallagher said to prefer a transfer away from Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have ample bodies in central midfield to mitigate the player’s departure, with Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and new signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall options in that position.

The Blues are on tour in the United States, where they have played Wrexham, Celtic and Club America. Their next fixture comes against Manchester City on August 3.
