Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi-Mikel compared Antonio Conte's training method to Mikel's.

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi recently juxtaposed the training methods of two of his former managers at Chelsea: Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

Mikel has never shied away from expressing his reservations about Conte’s methods, and in a recent broadcast, he reiterated those sentiments.

He explained how physically intensive the Italian’s pre-season preparations can be, compared to Jose, who prioritised ball-required drills.

What Mikel said

The 38-year-old was a pundit tonight in BeinSport's broadcast of the Premier League's 2024/25 season-opening match between Manchester United and Fulham.

Speaking about how prepared the players were for the first game of the season, Mikel provided insight into pre-season dynamics.

He explained how different they can be for different managers, and he utilised two of his former coaches, Mourinho and Conte, as examples.

“Managers are different in terms of preseason. With Mourinho, it was about the ball. From day one, running whatever we did was with the ball,” Mikel said.

“He wanted us to feel the ball, he wanted us to be accustomed with the ball. When you have gone away for a few weeks, you need to come back and start feeling the ball again, so with Mourinho was about the ball.

“Conte probably was the worst. Conte there was nothing to do with the ball. In the first two weeks, it was pure running, nothing to do with the ball. You could see the players, everybody just throwing up. He was just absolutely brutal.”
