Liverpool lost at Anfield for the first time this season, handing Arsenal and Manchester City the advantage in the Premier League title race
Liverpool suffered a devastating blow to their Premier League title aspirations as Crystal Palace secured a crucial victory at Anfield, handing the advantage to Arsenal in the title race.
A first-half goal from British-Nigerian midfielder Eberechi Eze was enough to earn the Eagles an incredible win at Anfield against Liverpool, while the hosts will rue several chances missed to equalise and even win the match.
How it happened
Jurgen Klopp's side entered the match with the opportunity to leapfrog their rivals and claim the top spot in the league standings, facing Oliver Glasner's Crystal Palace in what was expected to be a routine fixture for the Reds.
However, it was Palace who stunned the home crowd by taking the lead just 10 minutes into the game, as Eberechi Eze capitalized on defensive lapses to slot the ball past Alisson and give Palace an early advantage.
Liverpool's woes continued as they narrowly avoided falling further behind, with Andy Robertson clearing a Jean-Philippe Mateta effort off the line, preventing Palace from doubling their lead.
Despite Liverpool's relentless pressure and attempts to find an equalizer, Palace held firm and frustrated the hosts, with Wataru Endo and Luis Diaz both striking the woodwork in quick succession.
As the first half came to a close, Liverpool found themselves trailing and ruing their sloppy performance in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half saw Liverpool pushing for a way back into the game, with Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota both coming close to scoring, only to be denied by Dean Henderson and Nathaniel Clyne respectively.
Despite Liverpool's relentless efforts, they were unable to find the breakthrough, with Curtis Jones firing wide as frustration grew among the home fans.
The defeat at Anfield, Liverpool's first of the season, dealt a significant blow to their title aspirations and handed Arsenal the opportunity to seize the top spot in the league standings with a victory over Aston Villa.
As the title race intensifies, Liverpool will be left to rue their missed opportunity, while Crystal Palace will celebrate a memorable victory that has thrown the Premier League title race wide open.
