Key match actions
The game started slowly with the first true attempt on goal arriving in the 19th minute. Tyler Dibling's effort was comfortably handled by Caoimhin Kelleher.
It seemed to spark increased effort from Liverpool who scored moments later. A long ball forward from Jarell Quansah took a deflection, setting up Darwin Nunez for a simple finish past the Saint's shot-stopper. Carrying the momentum, the Reds doubled their advantage shortly after the half-hour mark, courtesy of a Harvey Elliott strike.
Liverpool remained firmly in control at the break. Southampton, however, came out strong in the second half, and their efforts paid off just before the hour mark.
A rebound off Japan international Wataru Endo presented Cameron Archer with a scoring opportunity, and he made no mistake, curling the ball past Kelleher to halve the deficit. Archer nearly completed the comeback three minutes later, but Kelleher's quick reflexes denied him.
Despite late pressure from the Saints, Liverpool held on to advance, to book a ticket in the semi-final of the competition.
