Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr assessed what to expect from Austin Eguavoen's side this weekend.
Benin Republic boss Gernot Rohr believes Austin Eguavoen is a better suit for the Super Eagles than any new coach the NFF could have hired, as he would have a better understanding of the team.
Rohr, 71, once held the role of Super Eagles head coach from 2016 until 2021, when he was fired by the federation and subsequently replaced by Eguavoen, who was given the job on an interim basis.

Nigeria vs. Benin: Prediction, head-to-head, team news, possible line ups and betting tips for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier
Nigeria will take on Benin Republic in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Saturday, September 7 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Here are predictions, team news, betting tips, and possible line-ups for the game.
Gernot Rohr: Benin Republic coach
The German tactician has since gone on to accept another role, as he was appointed by the Benin Football Federation (BFF) to become their head coach in 2023.
Rohr has already gotten one over the Super Eagles in recent times, as his Cheetahs beat a Finidi George-led Nigeria 2-1 in the World Cup qualifiers.
The defeat, along with the draw against South Africa, led to the untimely exit from the role for Finidi, and after a fruitless search for a replacement and with important AFCON qualifiers scheduled for this international break, the NFF entrusted the team to its technical director, Eguaveon for a fourth stint in the dugout for the Nigerian national team.
What Rohr said
Nigeria will face the Benin Republic again on September 7th in their bid to make Morocco 2025. Speaking ahead of the clash, he gave his assessment on what to expect from an Eguavoen-led Eagles.
He suggested that Nigeria could pose a more complicated opposition under the former Gent defender, as he must have learnt from his previous failed spells.
“I think Eguavoen knows them (the Super Eagles) better than a new coach,” Rohr told NationSports.
“He surely must have learned from the two eliminations (for Qatar 2022 and AFCON 2021) and, perhaps, his team could be more dangerous to deal with.”
