FKFPL: Elvis Rupia on the cusp of breaking Sonyi's 26 premier league goal record

Mark Kinyanjui 18:00 - 22.06.2023

Elvis Rupia equalled broke the long-standing record of 26 goals (not 27 as stated by FKF) in a single KPL season set by Maurice Sonyi Ochieng in 1976.

Following the penultimate gameweek of the 2022/23  FKF Premier League season, a long-standing record of goals scored in a single season was finally broken by someone the book markers did not put as the favorite to win it at the end of the season.

Football lovers in Kenya would have  been expecting Benson Omala to have hit the 30 goal landmark by now, as he was leading the races by a landslide just over two months ago

However, the record ended up being broken by Elvis Rupia of Kenya Police, as his goals inspired the side to a 4-1 win over a hapless Vihiga Bullets on Wednesday afternoon.

Pulse Sports Kenya brings you the goalscoring charts after the conclusion of the latest round of fixtures.

26 Goals: Elvis Rupia (Kenya Police)

Elvis Machapo Rupia finally made history by becoming the first player to hit 26 goals (Not 27 as allegedly stated by FKF and Kenya Police) , equalling Maurice Sonyi Ochieng of Gor Mahia in 1976  when he hit a brace against Vihiga Bullets at the Police Sacco Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

In so doing, Rupia has put himself in a commendable position to now claim the golden boot and officially break the record, after coming close two previous times in 2017 and 2021.

He will be fancying his chances of adding even more against KCB on Sunday, but he will have his work cut out to beat custodian Bryne Omondi and extend his lead, or risk Benson Omalla catching up with him again.

25 Goals: Benson Omala (Gor Mahia)

It was another gameweek to forget for Benson Omala, who has flattered to deceive ever since missing a penalty against AFC Leopards in May.

He started on the bench against Kakamega Homeboyz and came on the pitch just after the hour mark, but could not get going as Gor Mahia lost 3-2 to the Mozzart Bet Cup finalists.

Omala will need to find his shooting boots against Nairobi City Stars on Sunday to stand a chance of potentially winning the golden boot. He will need to score at least three goals to oust Rupia, hoping Rupia himself does not score.

14 Goals: Joseph Mwangi (Nzoia Sugar FC)

Joseph Mwangi was unable to add to his tally of 14 for the season for the sixth league game in a row as Nzoia Sugar lost 2-0 to KCB.

After months of being  allegedly on 15 goals as per a report by FKF, it has now been confirmed by Pulse Sports that Mwangi is actually on 14 goals by the player himself.

Mwangi netted ive times against Wazito, thrice against Posta Rangers, twice against Vihiga Bullets, Kariobangi Sharks, and once against Kenya Police and Mathare United.

12 goals: Umaru Kasumba (Bandari FC)

After a good run of goalscoring form that saw him hit double digits for the season, Umaru Kasumba was unable to add to his tally for the third week in a row  in Bandari’s 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks at the Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa

12 goals: Hassan Abdallah (Bandari FC)

Hassan Abdallah continued to show his fine run of form under new coach Twahir Muhiddin as he netted a goal in the side’s 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks

12  goals. Kevin Etemesi (Nairobi City Stars)

Kevin Etemesi has had a unique debut season in the Kenya Premier League. Having signed from the third tier of Kenyan football, he has now hit 12 goals for the season, and is the only FKFPL player to have scored a brace in five different matches. He scored a brace against FC Talanta to put his tally to 12 for the season.

10. Deogracious Ojok (Tusker)

Deogracious Ojok of Tusker became the latest member of the 10 goal mark when he headed a goal into the net during their 1-1 draw against Posta Rangers in Ruaraka.
