The exhibition match was part of the 60th Madaraka Day celebrations.

Embu All Stars deservedly defeated second-string Gor Mahia side in a game of few chances to win the Madaraka Day Cup on Thursday afternoon- although there was a hint of controversy about their winning goal.

Gor Mahia was the dominant force from the start of the game but wasted many goal-scoring opportunities before being punished by Bruce Gitonga's controversial strike.

Despite all the legitimate and robust tackles that K’Ogalo had to endure against the wrath of the amateur Embu-All Stars players, the controversial referee awarded the home side a goal in the 68th minute after the ball hit the side netting from Gitonga’s corner.

K'Ogalo, fighting for their second consecutive Madaraka Day Cup, looked sluggish in the first stanza in a cagey affair at the bumpy pitch.

Gor Mahia had the best chance in the first half, with Dennis Ng'ang'a guilty of putting the ball over the bar from six yards out and then directing a header straight at the keeper.

The dominance continued after the break, and on the hour mark, Bryson Wangai saw the ball rebound twice off the woodwork within seconds.

However, celebratory theatrics by the Embu players and fans in the 68th minute were enough to convince the referee to point at the centre despite protests from Gor Mahia players.

Gor Mahia has been winless in the last three games in their previous three games and will face Ulinzi Stars on Sunday.

Jonathan McKinstry's coached side is trailing log leaders Tusker FC with a single point with just three games to the end of the season.
