The FA has confirmed a replacement on an interim basis for Gareth Southgate following his resignation after Euro 2024.

Following Gareth Southgate's resignation as England's national team manager after the 2024 European Championship, the Football Association has named Lee Carsley as his interim replacement.

Carsley, who led England's under-21 side to the European Championship title in 2023, will take charge of the senior squad ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 UEFA Nations League campaign.

"Lee Carsley has been appointed interim head coach of England senior men ahead of the start of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League campaign," the FA announced in a statement on Thursday.

The 50-year-old Carsley, who earned 40 caps for the Ireland national team as a player, brings a wealth of experience and success at the youth international level.

His under-21 side's triumph at last year's Euros marked a significant achievement for the FA's youth development program.

Carsley's interim appointment comes after Southgate decides to step down from the role following England's performance at Euro 2024. The details surrounding Southgate's resignation and the FA's long-term plans for the senior team's leadership are still to be determined.

In the meantime, Carsley will be tasked with guiding the England squad through the upcoming Nations League campaign as the FA conducts its search for a permanent replacement.

“It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process of recruiting a new manager,” he said. “My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the UEFA Nations League.”

His ability to transition seamlessly from the youth setup to the senior level will be crucial in maintaining stability and continuity within the national team program.

How Carsley's interim tenure unfolds and whether he can position himself as a viable long-term candidate for the England managerial position will be interesting to see.
