One cannot refuse to lead one of the best teams in Africa.
Chelle: A Long-Awaited Appointment
The Super Eagles have been without a permanent head coach since Finidi's infamous departure in June 2024.
The NFF appointed a caretaker manager, Austin Eguavoen, who successfully guided the team through the AFCON 2025 qualification process.
However, fans and officials were eager for a permanent solution, leading to Chelle's appointment.
Chelle's transition to the Super Eagles was not without its challenges. When the NFF approached him, he was still under contract with MC Oran, having signed a deal in October 2024 that was set to run until the summer of 2026.
This led to some uncertainty, as the club initially suspended discussions regarding his future until after the cup final. However, Chelle’s commitment to Nigeria ultimately prevailed, with the coach emphasising that managing the Super Eagles was an opportunity he could not pass up.
Start Date
Chelle announced that he would be heading to Nigeria to start his new role on Monday, following his farewell to MC Oran fans.
This means that fans can expect him to officially begin his duties as head coach of the Super Eagles on January 15, 2025.
His first task will involve preparing the team for upcoming international fixtures, starting with the important 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda as Nigerians look to continue the momentum from their recent AFCON qualification.
Despite the mixed reactions from Nigerians, Chelle’s appointment brings a sense of optimism for the Super Eagles as they look to build on their recent successes.
During his time with Mali, he had an impressive record of 2.10 points per game, winning 13 of his total 21 games at the helm with five draws, only losing three matches.
