Manchester United target ex-Chelsea star in surprise move to solve problem position
Manchester United are reportedly in talks to sign a former Chelsea defender as Erik ten Hag sets his team up for the new season.
Ten Hag wants squad depth
Ten Hag is looking to add more players to his team after last season's injury crisis destroyed Man United's campaign.
When asked how many new players he wants, Ten Hag said, as reported by Daily Mail, “Just the squad as strong as possible. We already had two very good buys, so when everyone is fit we have a team that can beat everyone.
“But the squad depth we have to catch up because we had injuries. We are vulnerable and we have to avoid this first by getting less injuries and second our squad has to be that good in the depth.
“The quality we have in [terms of] depth we have to catch up but even more because this season will be the survival of the fittest.”
Should Casemiro or Scott McTominay depart, United wants to bolster its full-back positions and add a new defensive midfield player.
They are also searching for another centre defender, as they have been connected to both Matthijs de Ligt of Bayern Munich and Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton.
The Red Devils will open their Premier League campaign against Fulham in August with Ten Hag looking to start the new season with a win.
