In a statement released by CAF, the Tunis outfit must stage their next two matches in continental competitions without spectators.

Tunisian club Esperance will host Egyptian outfit Al Ahly behind closed doors in their CAF Champions League semi-final clash on Friday, May 12 due to their fans causing trouble in the previous round.

In a statement released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Tunis outfit must stage their next two matches in continental competitions without spectators.

In addition, the four-time winners of the Champions League - the premier African club competition - have further been fined $300,000.

Reacting to the decision, Esperance said they would appeal the sanctions, believing they are "too severe", after clashes between a section of their supporters and riot police in Rades near Tunis last weekend.

CAF strongly condemned the irresponsible behavior of some Esperance supporters during the quarterfinal match between their team and rivals JS Kabylie of Algeria in Tunisia, which caused a 40-minute delay to the second half.

“The CAF disciplinary committee imposed a four-match fan ban on the club while playing at home due to the incidents of the JSK game.”

Esperance said in a statement via its official Facebook page. “The ban will be reduced to just two games on condition that there will be no abuses in the coming 12 months. If a similar behavior is repeated during next year the on-hold two-match fan ban will be applied automatically while the club will be prevented from playing in the same competition next season,” the statement added.

During the match, some spectators tried to invade the pitch at half-time during their quarter-final second leg against Algerian club JS Kabylie.

There had been no goals during the first half as Esperance led 1-0 on aggregate in the North African showdown.

Although police prevented invasion of the pitch, some fans were still injured by various objects hurled at them.

Tear gas was fired into a section of the crowd and order was eventually restored with the second half kicking off 45 minutes behind schedule. The return match ended in a 1-1 draw.
