Commercial Bank of Ethiopia came from a goal down to beat Buja Queens from Burundi 2-1 in the opening match of the 2023 CAF Women's Champions League CECAFA qualifiers on Saturday at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.
The Burundians burst into the match with pace and physicality, which paid almost instantly, but Ethiopian goalkeeper Tarikua Balcha was quick on her feet.
However, the keeper blundered in the 14th minute when she failed to hold onto or punch away a tricky corner kick, dropping the ball in Topister Situma's path.
The Kenyan forward did not make any mistake stubbing the rebound to the far corner for the opener.
Ethiopia made three substitutions just before the break with coach Gizaw Heye bringing on Berka Amare for Teizita Weldemeskel and Nardos Getnet for Birra Etsegnet.
The efforts paid off shortly after restart with Aregash Kalsa Tadese pulling the equaliser before captain Loza Abera fired the team into the lead in the 76th minute.
The Ethiopians take charge of Group A with three points ahead of Kampala Queens opener against Yei Joints Stars from South Sudan.
